Nature is full of amazing textures—soft fur, crisp leaves, rippling grass, rugged bark, rocks—and drawing them can feel overwhelming. In this two-day workshop, Denise Howard will show you just how simple and enjoyable these textures can be once you learn her techniques that anyone can master.
Together, you’ll explore how to:
- Build a strong, eye-catching composition
- Use nature’s little imperfections to your advantage
- Choose colors that make your drawings seem realistic
- Conquer large expanses
- Create rocks and bark with four steps
- Bring leaves, grasses, and moss to life
- Add detail without getting lost in it
Denise will break down each texture into shapes, colors, and strokes you can understand and use right away. As you practice a handful of nature’s most common surfaces, you’ll gain the confidence and skills to take on many more—on your own terms, at your own pace.
If you’ve ever wished you could capture the feel of nature in your colored pencil work, this workshop will open the door. You’ll leave with new techniques, fresh ways of seeing, and the joy of knowing you can draw the textures you love.
This workshop will be offered live online via Zoom. A video of the workshop will be sent to all registered a couple days following the completion of the workshop.

Join our Watch Party! If you are local to Lewisville, NC, and would like to participate in this Zoomed workshop with a group of other colored pencil artists, then register to attend our Watch Party! The party will be held at Mary Alice Warren Community Center in Lewisville at the same time as the workshop.  Fun, food, and fellowship while learning….What could be better?!?
About Denise:
Denise Howard is the author of 101 Textures in Colored Pencil from Walter Foster Publishing. Her realistic works in graphite and colored pencil have won national and international awards, including 3rd Place in Strokes of Genius 13 and inclusion in the de Young Open. She has been featured in Colored Pencil Magazine and COLOR Magazine, has work published in several books, and is popular as a workshop presenter. She is a ten-year merit signature member of both the Colored Pencil Society of America and the UK Coloured Pencil Society, and is president of CPSA. Before her art career, she was one of the developers of iPhoto at Apple and earned movie credits on Antz and the Academy Award-winning Shrek at PDI/DreamWorks. She holds a BA in Art and a BS in Mathematics/Computer Science from Truman State University, as well as an MS in Computer Science from Ohio State University.
